Well, today is not off to much of a start. I reexamined the tax notice the state sent me and discovered that I was supposed to file a protest on or before *July 10*, not August 10. Dammit. Now apparently I will have to pay Missouri $750 for my Kansas state unemployment, upon which I have already paid taxes to Kansas. Dammit dammit dammit. Maybe I'll put the protest form in the mail anyway and see if they'll take it.

EDIT: And I'm going to need another unbudgeted $500 to fulfill a commitment I hadn't planned on having to fulfill in this particular way at this particular time. Anybody got any grand ideas about where I can come up with an extra $1200 over the next month and a half? Sheesh.

It can't hurt to try. At this point you already owe the money, so the most they can say is no, but at least you tried.

Major suckage. The ironies involved in taxing unemployment are no doubt unhelpful, even as absurdities.

Bonus points since funds for unemployment come *from taxes*.
Gr. Further bonus points because this will be the most taxed income I have ever had, being as I've paid the federal government and one state on it already, and will now get to pay a second state as well. In fact, the tax I will have paid on my unemployment benefits will now equal more than 25% of the original benefit amount. Somehow, that jist don't seem right.

You might want to ask BJ from Sprial for a loan, if that feels comfy.

I'm prepared to lend you 150 bucks for 6 months if that will help. I know it's not much but if it will stop the bleeding temporarily, it's yours.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not exactly hemhorraging over here. Mostly just worried about whether or not I'm gonna get to NC -- the state can wait, especially since they're wrong anyway.

And yo, when did BJ get money?

BJ's money

I have had my share of interesting times with Missouri income tax. Whether you missed the deadline for the protest may really be irrelevant. If I recall correctly, protest in this situation does not mean what you would think. What I needed to do was file an amended tax return. It sounds like you didn't get credit for paying taxes to Kansas. Did you file a return with Missouri for that year at all? If not, you probably just need to file a return to get credit for paying your taxes to Kansas. Also you have to really read the fine print on the resident/nonresident status on the tax forms and choose wisely. Even if you do end up owing money, you just have to make a payment plan with them. You end up paying more in interest, but what else is new? Seriously, the game is not over yet!

Thanks for the good word! In fact, it does look like what has happened is that either I managed not to include the MO-CR with the Kansas taxes on it, or they managed to lose it. I'm going to mail the thing in anyway, and see what they do with it.

Tara and I had to magic $1400 out of nowhere to appease the IRS, so I feel for you. We threw a 3 day garage sale, selling not only our belongings but we asked our friends to donate anything they had that they didn't want. We did pretty good...but I think that mostly had to do with friends coming and buying things.
I sold just about anything I could put my hands on, including all my books and I was poised to sell all my music but didn't have to at the last moment. We made a few hundred on the sale, Tara sold a bodhran for another few hundred, we squirreled away every dime we made, and a few very generous friends gave us a bit of money to round out the rest.

I know you're doing (or have done) the sale for Gaia community, but I thought I'd pass along what worked for us...we're facing another payment to the IRS soon, but if I find any spare $ when the budget is appeased I'll send it your way. Likewise, if you want to do a sale, I have a few significant items still kicking around (including one piece of NASCAR memorabilla) from the sale that I've been meaning to send to consignment or finally learn how to sell on EBay...if you want any of them to try and get $$ for them, they're yours for the taking.

Thanks for the good word -- I'm not too worried about it though, if I have to pay them, I can pay them in installments.
And I've got some stuff bound for EBay as well...
