The writing project
May. 18th, 2004 09:59 pmYou're all invited to play along, if you wish. The project is this: take a classic work, preferably on an epic scale. Divide it up into events of note. Each person will take an event, or a chapter, or however it works out, and distill that piece of the story down to its basic concepts. Then, they will choose another setting, and write a short story containing the same concepts as their piece of the classic. When we're done, we'll put them all together, and have a collection of short stories, that when laid end to end, will mirror the story arc of the original.
We talked about doing Lord of the Rings in this fashion. Someone might do the Birthday Party on a Southern plantation, at which an elderly relative reveals an alarming secret. Imagine the Council of Elrond as the French Resistance... or the Ents of Fangorn Forest as giant construction robots going to work on the home of the man who lobbied to have them scrapped. Anything goes.
Comment if you want to play, either with LotR, or with some other story - leave your suggestions below. After we get a crew of players and decide on a story, we'll choose some conventions, and set everyone to work.
