Yesterday we finally filled out the cast for Thrice Upon a Time - we'd been missing a middle child, aged 10-12, and we finally got one. I think the child we got is an utter brat, but I suppose that's neither here nor there. I fully expect Caroline to make the girl cry at some point in the process, and that will probably be good for everyone.

Molly, the 7-year-old who's playing the youngest child, was just fabulous at the auditions, and I think she's going to steal the show. The kids did improv games for their auditions, and Molly kept trying to jump in and do the games too, and Caroline kept telling her "Molly, you already have a part - let these girls play".

The whole show is essentially about telling a bedtime story to Molly's character, and having her sort of re-structure the story to her liking. So part of the auditions involved Molly telling the middle child about the things that the queen in the story was going to do, and they would then dress Andrew as the queen, from a huge pile of dress-up clothes, based on the things Molly was saying about the queen. So in one story, the queen lost her crown, and had to be a construction worker (the girls put a hard hat on Andrew) but she had a magic finger (they put a halloween witch finger on him), and she used it to get rich (a gold cape), etc. Which was all well and good until...

Molly: "And she always wore a glove, because if she pricked herself with her fingernail, she'd become eeeee-ville"
Middle Child (to Andrew): "Here, put on this glove, so you won't become eeee-ville"
Molly: "And then, she decided that she was a lesbian, and she met another lesbian girl, and..."
Middle Child: (stares at Molly - stops moving entirely)
Caroline (the Director): "Okay, that's enough..."

And that was the end of that game. She threw the girl who was playing the middle child role pretty good, but none of the parents seemed bothered (which was good). I suppose we weeded out anybody who would have a problem with their kids being in a show where they were going to talk about sexual preference when Caroline told them that the main characters were the children's uncle and his drag queen partner.

Apparently Caroline had a very interesting time explaining to Molly what a drag queen was...
Caroline: "Well, a drag queen is a man, maybe gay, maybe straight, who dresses up to look like a woman. Not like mommy or I usually dress, but like Miss America, with a fancy dress and high heeled shoes, and make-up"
Molly: "Okay. Why do they do that?"
Caroline: "We'll talk about that later..."
