Anansi the Spider
Aug. 6th, 2003 09:02 amAnansi wanted badly to court one of the king's daughters, but there were two of them, and they were both so beautiful that he couldn't decide. So, being the clever old spider that he was, he decided to try and court them both. This did not work so well. Not only did the princesses find out about it, but also the king did not so much want a spider for a son-in-law, even an esteemed spider like old Anansi. So it was that the king had Anansi captured and tied up, and was going to roast him over a fire. And Anansi laid there in the ropes, tied up and wondering what he was going to do, when along comes Tiger. Now Anansi and Tiger never did get along, Tiger being a rough sort of fellow and none too bright, and given to bullying people and frightening them. So Anansi cries out to Tiger, "Hey Tiger, I bet you wish you was me!" And Tiger says "Why in the world would I wish that, you're all tied up there on the ground. Who did that to you, anyway?" So Anansi says, "Was the King's daughters - they want to take me home so bad, they had to tie me up and make sure I didn't leave." So Tiger gets a big grin on his face, and says "Oh yeah? Well, how bout I untie you, and run you off, and I get tied up and go home with the king's daughters?" And Anansi says "Well, not much I can do to stop you, is there? You're so big and strong and all." So Tiger unties Anansi, and Anansi runs off. And Tiger ties himself up and waits. When the king and his daughters get there, they quick hit Tiger over the head and drag him off to be roasted over the fire. And old Anansi, he just laughs and laughs.
