The Matrix has no pirates
May. 15th, 2003 09:25 amSaw the new Matrix flick last night. Better than I feared, but not nearly as good as I'd hoped. I don't think I have anything to say about it that won't spoil though, so I'll wait a bit before posting my deconstruction of the thing. Maybe I'm getting too particular about my films these days.
Really, the thing I was most disappointed in had nothing to do with the film though, but was the fact that there was a trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean that showed absolutely nothing but scenery, and not much of that. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good kung-fu/philosophy film as much as the next guy, but it can't compare with the fascination that pirate films hold. Bonus points if the pirate film includes Johnny Depp being terribly, terribly campy. It's a guilty pleasure thing.
Non-spoiling Matrix note: Neo's opera coat is fabulously beautiful, and the cinematographers seemed to appreciate it as much as I did - a good portion of his fight scenes seem choreographed and filmed so as to best show off the lines of the coat. I enjoy that sort of cooperation between costumer, choreographer and cameraman, but some of the rest of the folk in the theater seemed inclined to point and giggle.
