Interesting statistic of the day. CNN/USA Today poll conducted at the end of last month yields the following revelation. When asked "Do you have a clear idea of what this war is about and what we are fighting for?" 81% of respondents answered that yes, it was clear to them why we were at war. The report I saw compared that to numbers obtained with similar samples being asked the same question in other wars, in the past. 74% felt that they understood why we were in the First Gulf War, 49% understood why we were in the Vietnam War, and 71% understood why we were in World War II.
Now, granted, the poll did not address what the respondents' perceptions of what the reasons for war actually were, only whether or not they knew why we were at war. So it could be that 81% of Americans are clear that we are in this war because the President wants to look tough in front of Daddy, or because purple monkeys said we should go to war, or because it's an odd year, and odd years are better for naked aggression than even years. But, according to the next section of the poll, 70% of respondents said they support the war, so I guess whatever reasons they see in this mess are good enough for them.
