Just for [livejournal.com profile] matchgirl42, who knows more movie quotes than the rest of the world. Put together.

Here are the rules to start a round, as per [livejournal.com profile] fionnabhar (who watches a completely different sort of film than I do, despite the fact that we're both overly fond of Red Dwarf:
1. Pick one dozen (or so) movies that are ones that you have special feelings about.
2. Pick a few lines of dialogue that mean something to you.
3. As people guess the film, strike out that entry.
4. If possible, after the film is guessed, explain why that movie made the list.

1. "10:15, personal note: It's fair to say I'm stepping out on a limb, but I am on the edge and that's where it happens.
Pi. Rented this on a whim, drawn in by the tag line on the box: Faith in Chaos. I thought, "I have faith in chaos! This will be the best movie EVAR!" And lo, it was pretty damned good. Kabalah, chaos theory, and trephination, all in the same picture.

2. "I am exhausted from living up to your expectations. Isn't that generous?"
Labyrinth. This is my favorite bit of the film, in which Sarah finally seems to get some clue that her world is what she makes of it. (Keep watching, this may become a theme.) Also, David Bowie in feathers.

3. "These walls are kind of funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, gets so you depend on them."
The Shawshank Redemption. Favorite prison movie ever, although I don't really think it has a lot of competition, since I don't watch a lot of prison movies. Good commentary on how it comes to pass that we get stuck doing the stupid things we do.

4. (a) "My work here is done. Time for the ritualistic sex!"
4. (b) "We weren't in hell! I mean there was this bright white light at the end of a long tunnel, right, and there was these chicks' voices, and that music..." "Yeah kinda uncool music, like, Enya. And these chicks' voices they were saying "Come to us, come towards the light". " "So what happened?" "We figured, fuck it, I mean it was really far!"

Idle Hands. My all-time favorite bad horror film, for reasons quoted in comments, below.

5. "It is only in my world that you can breathe!"
Don Juan de Marco. More on the theme of making your own reality. I seem to like films about that, for some reason. Peel back the goofy - it's magician-tastic. I mean, it's a story about this guy who's so completely in control of his own story that he drags everybody else along with him, even though the story is crazy. It's sort of like Miracle on 34th Street, except instead of some old guy who thinks he's Santa Claus, it's Johnny Depp in eyeliner. There's nothing wrong with that either.

6. "Most men, they'll tell you a story straight true. It won't be complicated, but it won't be interesting either."
Big Fish. A recent addition to the favorites list. Once again, invented world compelling enough to pull in other people. Dig it.

7. "I like to look for things no one else catches. I hate the way nobody ever looks at the road in old movies."
Amelie. Yet another film about the triumph of the unconventional people. Or something like that. Really, I'm all about the cinematography and the color green.

8. "People think it's all about misery and desperation and death and all that shit which is not to be ignored, but what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise we wouldn't do it. After all, we're not fucking stupid. At least, we're not that fucking stupid."
Trainspotting. I particularly enjoyed the use of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" in this film. That alone would make it a favorite.

9. "Did you go to school for that?" "No, I got kicked out of school for that."
Benny and Joon. Included for sentimental reasons -- it reminds me of old high school friends, with whom stupid physical comedy/clowning happened with disturbing frequency.

10. "Well, let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. Based on this morning's reading, it would be a Twinkie thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds."
Ghostbusters. Possibly the first "real" movie I ever got to see.

4. Idle Hands. I cheated I looked it up. In my defense I took time to watch a trailer of it and now I'm fairly certain I must see this movie it looks delightfully bad.

God sees you when you cheat. I hope you know this.

It is terribly, obnoxiously bad. It has everything: zombies, sexy druid priestesses, cop jokes, masturbation jokes, a detached hand in a microwave, and, of course, Mighty Joe Bong. I have a copy, and would be perfectly willing to loan it to you.

It is, indeed. Certainly my favorite film involving taking a power tool to one's head. Well spotted.

Yep.
