Grumble, grumble, grumble : Pre-Con report

I've fallen down on my good intentions to not injure myself before going to Dragon*Con. Possibly literally. I seem to have a big bruise on my right knee from... something? I don't know what. I like to think that I notice when I injure myself, but... er... no.

Also, for extra bonus points, I burned the hell out of a couple fingers last night while making swag for [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants' art show panels. Note to self: Next time you say you'll do a florals project more complicated than standing some silk flowers in a vase, check to see if there's floral wire and green tape in the house. Fortunately, the thing has some gold in it, so the thin brass wire doesn't look terribly out of place, and a lot of it is covered with hot-glued on leaves (hence the burning). Looks pretty good, though. I think. It looked pretty good last night late, when I was really tired, anyway.

I'm really looking forward to the trip. In addition to all the usual Con goodness, I'll be extra excited to sleep in a place where there are no crickets. Yesterday, I killed two in the laundry room, and captured one in my bedroom and ejected it from the house, and still had one in the bathroom this morning singing its little fucking cricket legs off. [livejournal.com profile] triadruid tried to kill it, but it wriggled up under the toilet stool, and continued to sing just as loud, except now with a little more reverb. Crickets are rapidly rising to the status of most hated many-legged creature ever. Centipedes are really really gross, and spiders bite you on the ass, but neither of those things steals your sleep, as a general rule. I'm going to have to spray the wall between my bathroom and the laundry room. Perils of living next to the garage, I suppose.

Still to do:
- Finish caduceus. This is taking way longer than I thought. I had this clever plan to paint an undercoat of black on the snakes and then finish them with Rub'n'Buff, so that the scale pattern would be somewhat retained, but alas, the black paint refuses to dry properly. And I can't nail the snakes to the pole, I'm going to have to glue them to the pole, which adds several hours to my calculation for cure time. That'll be my first project when I get home. Glue snakes, clamp 'em down, 4 hours later, paint the effing thing and call it Good.
- Pick up leathers from [livejournal.com profile] niveus_tigris. And, extra added bonus nosering. I've been trying to get a fake nosering that will support a fine chain, and had found one, except that it was neon green, and it needed to be gold. The finish wouldn't hold gold wax or gold paint, so [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants gilded it for me with adhesive and gold leaf. That was all well and good, except that the attachment mechanism had to push into the piece itself and spring back, and the adhesive got into the spring and effed it up. So I was bitching and moaning about where the hell I was going to find a fake nosering in the next 24 hours, and [livejournal.com profile] niveus_tigris says, "I could turn some brass wire for you...". And lo, he did, so that costume is saved. I knew I should have just gone ahead and pierced my nose a few months ago and saved myself a lot of trouble. :/
- Pack.
- Try to get some sleep before we go.

May you get everything done you need to, and may you have a safe trip to Geek Mecca.

Thank you. :)

Have fun! And get some sleep, 'kay? I'm starting to worry a little about you three (and, by extension, other drivers along your route).

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, we're fine. We're professionals. *grin*
Actually, I went to sleep probably about 1 - 1:30 last night, and would have gotten a totally reasonable amount of rest if not for the thrice-damned cricket. Also, we drive in shifts, while the other ones sleep, so it works out pretty well.

[identity profile] celtic-elk.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
OK. Have a safe, cricket-free journey, and hug anyone you think would appreciate a hug from me. (I'll leave that to your discretion.)

What, no worry to spare for us hapless passengers? ;)

Be reasurred. It's only about 9 hours from my house to Atlanta, and I've done it in one stretch before. If the Trio are too pooped to drive straight, I promise to stage a mutiny and get us there safely. =B^)

I figured you'd be up for that... and then I realized that I didn't know whether or not you drove, so I didn't want to volunteer you for driving. Especially since I already volunteered you to be in the parade :) (BTW, I have stuff that will fit you, with the possible exception of pants. I think we have some pants that will work, but if you have some nondescript dark pants, you might wanna bring them just in case.)

[identity profile] auraseer.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Dark pants, check.

WOo! I am looking forward to tales of the DragonCon!

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
There will, undoubtedly, be some. Perhaps even tales of drunken infamy. That certainly happened last year... :-P

Why can't you nail the snakes to the pole anymore? I was so looking forward to that...

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Because in order to get them even close to the correct angle and arc, I'll have to attach the side of the snake to the bottom of the disc. I initially thought that the top or bottom of the snake would attach to the disc, but now I don't think that will work. You are welcome to play with it if you like and see what you think, though.

...aaaand my brain just went to the "snakes on a pole" place that I imagine yours have been going for the past week....

buena suerte =) be safe and have fun!

Have a safe journey!

(And drop on by the Kilt Inspection Team happy hour on Friday night at the Hyatt Bar! We are still using your extremely cool design, although this year it's on stickers instead of buttons. :D )

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2007-08-29 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I should be there at KIT Happy Hour -- I'll see if I can get [livejournal.com profile] triadruid in his kilt and there too :)

Coincidence be damned!

This week is just bad for right knees. There must be something to this... or not. You three have fun!

Hope you have fun at the con... take a ton of pics for those of us who can't be there!!!
