I must be feeling uppity today

I want to do some sort of massive and ridiculous gift exchange thing for the Winter Avarice Festival. Some sort of secret-pal arrangement, one-time only, through the auspices of teh Intarweb (which I hear is shit, but I imagine that's just Sturgeon's Law* in action).

Anyway, this would probably involve sending me your address and a brief sort of description of things that you like/hate/are violently allergic to, letting me match you up with somebody, and then sending them a gift, and somebody else will send you a gift, and so on and so forth.

Of course, this only works if people want to play. Anybody want to play?

* Sturgeon's Law says "90% of everything is crap!". Thus far, it seems to be applicable on any scale, thus a natural law.

It sounds like fun, but I am notoriously horrible about sending gifts to people on time. It is best for all involved if I do not play.

Does it have to be done by mail?

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not really. It doesn't even have to be secret, although recipients probably shouldn't know who got them until they get the gift. If you get someone you're going to see, you could just give them the thing. If you get something you can email or dropship, that would probably be good too.

i'm game.

You got all of the clever today, apparently

I think I like it, but I'm a little unclear. You get to play Hermit Secret Santa and pair everybody up in a single-blind experiment, is that right? Or is this more like UNIPEP?

I was actually going to match people one-to-one by random draw, but not so that any two people get each other. I'm just facilitating the stochastic method, hey. But in general, you wouldn't know who got you until you got your stuff.

One thing you might consider: it will be very difficult for you to do the matching and NOT know who has you. If that matters or takes the fun out of it for you, you might figure out some way to get an otherwise noninvolved person to do that.

I am all about swapping shit with people and if I can do it under the pretense of gift giving to a potential stranger all the better!

I am like, in.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-11-08 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what really appeals to me about this. If it works out right, I'll know everybody, but a lot of people will get to send something to someone they don't know, and I'm all about giving stuff away to people I don't know.

[identity profile] celticwhistlin.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Totally fun!

BTW

[livejournal.com profile] cerrunos said that he too would like to play this game... :-)

If you want to up the ante and be ambitious as well as clever, we did this for a year, starting at Christmas/Yule/Whatever, and did small things periodically throughout the year. It involved having the person's birthday, anniversary or other important date, etc. We revealed outselves, so to speak, at the next Christmas/Yule/Whatever. For a one time thing, you might set a price limit on that, so as not to discourage folks from participating due to finances.

Whatever. I'm in.

That would be ambitious. Maybe too ambitious. I will think upon it, and consult my demons.

Was trying to reason it out, but, f*%k it, yeah, count me in if it happens.

Sure, man. I'm game.

[identity profile] capriciouslass.livejournal.com 2005-11-09 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, it sounds like fun. I'm guessing [livejournal.com profile] niveus_tigris would like to do it also.
