Very busy weekend at EHQ... well, sort of. We started off Friday at a viewing of the space elsewhere christened "The Loft" that Gaia Community is considering moving into. It's a dump. However, it's a dump that has all the space we need and wouldn't require us to pare our worship style down to suit the landlord, so I'm willing to consider it. It's a rental, but I heard a rumor that the landlord was willing to let us rent-to-own, so again, I'm interested where I perhaps wouldn't be otherwise.

The rest of the weekend was devoted to working on the Fence of Doom and planning for the trip to DragonCon. A new breakthrough in fence technology has occurred, as Co-Worker D. was kind enough to talk her husband into loaning us his compressor and pneumatic nailer. Good times. Of course, when he showed up to bring us the equipment, we were all recently risen and not yet dressed. Oh well. The neighbors see us in our bathrobes all the time anyway. The delivery inspired us to spend some more time deconstructing the existing fence, so that part is nearly done. Now, to finish pulling boards, and start digging holes for new posts, and then, the world, actually putting up the new part of the fence.

Also, we spent some time working on Wheel of Time costumes for DragonCon. [livejournal.com profile] triadruid and I spent another afternoon combing the thrift stores. This yielded a black dress with a mandarin collar that will convert very nicely to an Asha'man coat for [livejournal.com profile] triadruid. Must say, the boy looks good in women's clothes. [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants ended up with the sea-green silk(ish) dress we bought last weekend, so we're getting close to done. Still to go:

  • Black pants for [livejournal.com profile] triadruid. (super easy)
  • Some sort of top for me, preferably sleeveless or short-sleeved, green, black, or white, and either somewhat oriental looking, or somewhat militaristic. Or something. (unknown difficulty. Tried a couple of options from our existing costumery, and liked a combination of green faire bodice and velvet top shaped to go under a sari, but it's not quite right -- too much tit showing for an Aes Sedai, and certainly too much tit for a Borderlander. This is the problem. I think that I inherently have too much tit for an Aes Sedai. Really, this should be something like a fitted and flared jacket, but I'm damned if I can find anything like that, and am looking for other options.)
  • Shawls for [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants, [livejournal.com profile] matchgirl42, and me. (Not too hard.)
  • Great Serpent rings for same. Spent some time last night making Sculpey mockups of the rings, on the theory that they only have to last for 12 hours. I made one that looked really nice and broke in the oven, and two that look okay but not great that survived. I gilded one of them, but I'm not entirely happy with it, as the liquid leaf I used was a more brown gold than bright gold. Maybe they'd be better with a different paint job. Or something. We'd just buy them, except that a) this will likely be the only time we ever wear them, and b) the versions of the thing that are commercially available look nothing like what I think they should look like. So the only method of getting rings that look like what I think they should look like is to make them. But I'm not sure that Sculpey is the ideal material. Suggestions welcome.

Also, we learned that there will be a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at DragonCon, which may require yet more costuming. Whee! Less than a month to go.

Hmmm...

I may meed to talk with you about this "loft."

At some point, could you email me?

Thanks...

Done, and done.

[identity profile] beccak1961.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Good luck on the fence. We had to re-build part of ours (when I say we I mean Jim and the boys) It took awhile but it looked great when done.
What is dragoncon? A convention? It sounds like fun.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks- we were hoping to get the fence done by Midsummer, but now, maybe we might get it done by Fall Equinox. *sigh*

DragonCon is the best convention ever. (http://www.dragoncon.org) It's stupid amounts of fun, and stupid fun, at that. It does require a lot of changes of clothes, though, to be done properly.

[identity profile] beccak1961.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool. They had a huge one down here in New Orleans, the boys went all three days. I think that's when Josh thought he might want to get into ummm... cosplay? I don't know, he wants to use the sewing machine.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That strikes me as very funny. Possibly because I have some confusion over whether the word 'cosplay' refers to just construction and wear of accurate character costumes, or whether it has to be for fetish purposes to qualify. :)

[identity profile] beccak1961.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I ask him that after doing some research... of course he is 22 and can fetish play if he wants too... but he said he just wants the costume part. Of course, he may just not want to discuss it with him mom lol!

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I wouldn't tell my mom if I was borrowing the sewing machine to make fetish clothes, either. :)

[identity profile] beccak1961.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
But I'm a cool mom! Of course, they don't see it, rotters.

Ohhh...

[identity profile] zanzaboonda.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The more I hear about this convention, the more it peaks my curiosity...

And it's been *so* long since I've seen RHPS-I'm jonesing now. *sigh*

Re: Ohhh...

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It should be good times. I'm reasonably sure you can still register - circa $70.

Re: Ohhh...

[identity profile] zanzaboonda.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, unfortunately, neither my time nor my budget will allow for this, but perhaps another year...

Oh baby...

[identity profile] zylch.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Did I hear the words "pneumatic nailer" in there?

Sorry, I'll clean that up now...

Yeah, we were kinda hoping you'd want to come over and play with show us how to use the thing...

moi?
I think [livejournal.com profile] niveus_tigris rated that as "Not Very Kinky", anyway.

Yes, but on my personal scale it's somewhere much higher, by virtue of it being my Sis.

If that helps any.

you have no idea how much it amuses me that you're more weirded out by my sex life than my biobro is. Or at least, more than he lets on...

Conversely, you'll never know how much of my squick factor is true, and how much is done just to amuse you and my other thirds...

But seriously. Anyone who's definition of 'sex life' includes nail guns is kinky. Not that that's a Bad Thing™...

You knew this already, I thought? Or have you forgotten the conversation of "Honey, pass me the 9/16ths wrench -- I need to add another eyebolt over here."

Nope, I remember.

What I'm saying is there is a vast difference between a socket set in bed (Rule #2 applies here), and power tools with ratings that require three digits to express conventionally (150 psi, 375 rpm, etc).

Maybe this belongs on [livejournal.com profile] niveus_tigris' Kink Scale...

voyeurism kinky?

[identity profile] zylch.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said it was. But then again, he's also never seen me with a nailgun, now has he? Changes the situation entirely.

Re: voyeurism kinky?

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine that pretty much anything is kinkier with a pneumatic appliance.

[identity profile] kcwitch.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
enchanted gifts has serpent rings for 1.99 each. they are in gold.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
But are they serpents biting their own tails?

[identity profile] kcwitch.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
he has some of those but they are much more expensive.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the thing... if they were just snakes, they'd be easy to find. :)
Thanks for the note, though.

The gold paint [livejournal.com profile] dragon_sword used for her dragon sculptures was very gold and shiny. That might work.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I love shiny. Do you know what brand it was?

[identity profile] fionnabhar.livejournal.com 2005-08-08 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Just plain old Accent and Folk Art craft paint. She has Imperial Antique Gold and Metallic Pure Gold. She says you may borrow them. They're pretty full, and rings, even with lots of duds, wouldn't take all that much. She's got plenty.

We've also got some of the gold spray paint left from the Golden Tools project™, but that may not be the 'tone' of gold you were going for, either...

costumes and Rocky Horror, oh my!

[identity profile] matchgirl42.livejournal.com 2005-08-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet. I've got the skirt and bodice on the way for my pirate wench costume, and some lurvely fabric to make some chemises. Still trying to find an Aes Sedai dress and some boots or appropriate foot gear for the pirate wench costume. And OMG now you've got me thinking of Rocky Horror costuming, lol. *excited happy bounce* I'd probably go for a transylvanian-type costume. Or hell, jeans and a Rocky tshirt with da lips would probably work, but would not be as much fun as a full costume, I'm thinking. :D No Janet for me again, nuh-uh.

And thanks ever so much again for looking for a shawl for me. Let me know the cost (materials/time) so I can get the money to you.

For rings.....hrm. My first thought was maybe building the sculpty onto a thin wire base, to make it hold together better? Or there's this (http://www.rings-things.com/catalog/268.pdf), or even this (http://www.rings-things.com/catalog/269.pdf). Not sure if either is available close to you/an option, but I'd thought I'd share. :D I do like the idea, very much so, I'm not thrilled about spending more than $10 or so on a ring I'm likely to wear only once, either.

If you would be so kind as to make mine when you make ya'lls, I would lurve you for like forever. :) And again, let me know cost so I can get the money to you. And size....hrm. Not sure of my ring size, actually. But for statistical purposes, my right forefinger circumference is 2.75" at it's widest point.
