Friday games - Top 5

I've stolen the High Fidelity game from [livejournal.com profile] lysana. She recommends that if you don't know why this is the High Fidelity meme, that you rent the movie. I, however, love you, and don't want you to have to suffer the pains of John Cusack's asshole neuroticism (unless you like that sort of thing). So I will just tell you. In the film, the record-store employees (of which Mr. Cusack was one) would periodically turn to each other and say, "Okay -- top five side 1, track 1 songs", or "Ok -- top five songs for Laura's dead father" or other things like that. It was really the only fun thing that happened in the film, which was otherwise all about living in your own head and imagining the horrible things people might be doing to you instead of just asking them what they were about. But anyway, I digress. And I really did like the Top 5 game.

So, anyway, ask me about my top five $NOUN.

Assuming that I have an opinion about $NOUN, and am willing to answer, I will tell you what they are.

Be creative.

I know of Eris, of course, but could you enlighten me as to the nature of the other four?

Also, Top Five Pizza Toppings?

Re: This is so why I'm not a culture-specific recon

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The short-short version:
Lugh is an Irish fellow -- he's sort of the god of generalized competence, and is often seen as a sun god, or possibly a thunder god, depending on who you ask.
Mannanan is Irish and/or Welsh (there's a Welsh Llew, as well, but he's a little different than his Irish cousin). He's an older sea god, traveler and sort of walker-between-worlds.
Bast is Egyptian - she's usually seen as a cat or a cat-headed woman, and is in charge of protection, war, and other qualities of wild cats, as well as granting the ability to have sex in the afterlife.
Brigid is Irish as well. She's a smith, a healer, a poet, a brewer, and a number of other things. She survived Catholicism and somehow got to be the foster-mother of Christ, which is fun.

Re: pizza:
1. Mushrooms
2. Pineapple
3. Jalapeno
4. Spinach
5. Cream cheese

How about your top five fictional villains?

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
1. The Phantom of the Opera (eponymous)
2. Dracula (eponymous)
3. Magneto (X-Men comics)
4. Asmodean (Wheel of Time series)
5. Captain Hook (Peter Pan stories, but especially as played by Dustin Hoffman in Hook... "To a ten-year-old, I'm huge!")

[identity profile] fionnabhar.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, Dracula. I forgot that one. Damn.

[identity profile] sirvinegar.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The "top five" thing is something my friends play often. I always saw it as a boy geek thing.

Top five fictional presidents.

or

Top five hair-metal bands.

*snort* Great icon. And good 2nd option, as we've just been doing garage-sale prep and come across entire boxes of tapes and CD's from the hair-band days... ;)

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a fine sort of game.

I'm going to go for hair-metal bands... one question: Top five hair-metal bands *now*, or top five hair-metal bands *back then*?

Top five things you like doing with your tongue.

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Kissing
2. Tasting
3. Obscene gestures
4. Funny noises
5. Rocky Horror Spoon Trick, yo.

[identity profile] wildnsquirrelly.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while since I've done #5, but I was fairly good at it then. I'm pretty sure it would come back to me without anyone losing an eye, and possibly earning a few lusty stares in the process. ;)

I'm new, but I'll play:)

Five favorite words? (stolen from the Actor's Studio)

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, fun! Top five favorite words (based on amount of fun to say):

1. DOOM!
2. Phantasmagoria
3. Fantastic
4. Rhinocerotic
5. Invincible

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] beccak1961.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I like rhinocerotic, in fact, I'm saying it as I type lol

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is, I can never remember if it means "of or pertaining to the nose, nose-like", or if it means "of or pertaining to rhinoceroses".

But I suppose it doesn't matter. :)

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] beccak1961.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... I thought it was erotic fantasies about noses...
hmmm.. oh well, I still like it.

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Or that, yeah.

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] kaikias.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The -cer- element refers to horns. So it either means "pertaining to rhinoceri" or "pertaining to nose-horns".

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] fionnabhar.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So, nose-horniness, then?

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

[identity profile] kaikias.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Something like that. :)

Re: I'm new, but I'll play:)

So [livejournal.com profile] beccak1961 was right, then. Good times :)

Okaaaay.... Discounting everything with spaceships, computers, steam engines, cars or calculus, and then discounting everything that I like as a series but can't pick a particular book from.... it must be:

1. Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien (I'm not sure why this should be true, but it must be true, based on number of times I've read the thing.)
2. Maskerade, Terry Pratchett (It's not *serious* fantasy, but hey. That's why I like it.)
3. The Dragonbone Chair, Tad Williams
4. Baudolino, Umberto Eco (I think that's fantasy, but it might be allegory. There are monsters in it.)
5. Neverwhere, Neil Gaiman (OK. There are cars in that.)

Top five compliments to get about yourself.
(that you actually get/have gotten)

[identity profile] featherynscale.livejournal.com 2005-07-25 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is what comes of living in a house full of social science majors, isn't it?

Ok. It took me some time to think of five compliments I have actually gotten, but here you go:

1. Someone thinks I've done a good job on some creative project
2. [livejournal.com profile] kittenpants agrees with me/thinks I'm right about something
3. Someone asks how I got the idea to do something (and is actually interested)
4. People laugh at my stories/say I'm funny
5. Someone says I look good in something

Probably. :D

Nice recovery, however.
